Tea in the Greenhouse

Flowers teach color theory

Welcome to Tea in the Greenhouse, where I share what’s inspiring me this week. The garden is now an explosion of color as the cutting beds and edible flower beds are in full bloom.

Every year I am surprised by the color combinations that appeal to me, the things that just grab me as I’m walking by. Colors that are not necessarily my favorites. What I’ve come to realize is that there is often a reason I am taken by the combinations — it is really just nature teaching me color theory. While I did not plan the colors in the edible flower garden (I planned based on whether or not I wanted to eat them), the palette ended up being yellows, oranges, blues, and purples. In other words, a group of complementary (opposite each other on the color wheel) and analogous (next to each other on the color wheel) colors. Seeing them together is so pleasing, it’s hard to look away!
